Education
BSc - Physics/Applied Maths - 1982. BSc Hons - Physics - 1983 PhD - Physics - 1987. All at the University of Natal, South Africa. Ongoing education? Well, in the research field typically you are working on novel technologies/theories most of the time - so it is a continuous learning process. It is also a continuous teaching process as one works with technical people of many disciplines and everyone has to be persuaded/convinced as to the direction being followed.
Experience
One aspect I learnt over many years was that an understanding of the principles and of an analytic method was crucial to equipping one to deal with mathematical and physical problems that are outside of the 'cookbook' solution approach. My preferred method is to initially assess a students needs. That is their current level of capability which breaks down into, comprehension ( that is what is their critical takeaway from a presented problem or physical concept ), and how do they then visualize, correctly or incorrectly, it and what technical skills can they harness. Given that information one has a starting point to help them along. Given a solid grounding of understanding neither mathematics nor physics is to be feared. I of course tutored while a post grad. Subsequently, while consulting at the UNM, mentored graduate students. More recently, discovered that my nieces daughter, middle school, was in trouble with math and in danger of being held back. Assessed her needs, helped her. Was fun. Have worked whole life in a R&D environment. Initially in nuclear industry, then for defense development, and finally for myself in research into particular laser types, which I patented, and which are currently the subject of attempts from various significant institutional quarters to setup proof of principle programs. Partially retired and looking for something meaningful that I can do that is within my expertise arena - tutoring in these fields is such.
